AMD to Acquire Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs for $8.2B

Semiconductor giant AMD has reached an agreement to acquire World Labs, a prominent developer of deep learning models designed to understand physical reality, for $8.2 billion, according to TechCrunch. The transaction aims to unite advanced artificial intelligence model research with high-performance hardware development.

World Labs founder Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist following the completion of the deal. In a statement reported by TechCrunch, World Labs explained that artificial intelligence development requires close collaboration across model research, systems, and compute. AMD stated that the integration of frontier workloads from World Labs will directly influence its future chip-making roadmap and help the company compete more effectively with rival chipmakers in the artificial intelligence sector.

Founded in 2024 by pioneering computer science expert Fei-Fei Li, World Labs focuses on creating deep learning models that possess a robust understanding of physical reality. The startup developed Marble, a product utilized for generating interactive environments and simulated settings suitable for training robotic platforms. World models are increasingly recognized as critical components for deploying generative artificial intelligence on autonomous vehicles and industrial robots, particularly for generating synthetic training data.

The acquisition is anticipated to close before the end of the year, pending standard regulatory approvals. Both companies previously established ties through an inference optimization and training partnership, which laid the groundwork for the multi-billion-dollar buyout.
