Fired OpenAI Safety Researchers Dispute Misconduct Claims
Three safety researchers recently fired by OpenAI have published an open letter disputing the company allegations that they mishandled sensitive information, according to TechCrunch. Jasmine Wang, Tomek Korbak, and Mikita Balesni warned that their dismissals create a chilling effect that will negatively impact workplace culture and hinder crucial artificial intelligence safety work.
OpenAI previously stated that the trio was terminated following an investigation that revealed a pattern of policy violations regarding the handling of sensitive research data and sharing information with an outside evaluation group. However, in their open letter directed to OpenAI governance committees, the researchers asserted that collaborating with external experts is an essential safety mechanism necessary to address risks before they materialize.
The researchers also denied involvement in a media leak concerning unmonitored model architectures. Wang separately addressed her termination on social media, stating that her access to an executive email inbox stemmed from an unresolved recruitment request and that she immediately reported accidentally opening a sensitive message.
OpenAI did not directly address specific questions regarding the exact policies violated, though an internal memo shared with TechCrunch denied that the departures were retaliatory. The company stated that the decisions followed an investigation into policy breaches rather than efforts to raise safety concerns.
